On 20 February 2026, the final conference of the PRIN 2022 SARCOS project (Steel And Recycled COncrete Slab) brought together students, researchers, and professionals at the University of Cagliari to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the ecological transition in the construction sector.
During the event, the main outcomes of the project were presented by Marta Saccone and Monica Valdés, highlighting the research carried out on steel–concrete composite slabs incorporating recycled aggregates, with a particular focus on structural performance, sustainability, and innovative design approaches.
The scientific discussion was enriched by the valuable contributions of Professor Flavio Stochino, Professor Claudio Bernuzzi, Professor Marco Simoncelli, and Professor Giuseppe Quaranta, who offered additional perspectives on sustainable structural systems and future research directions.
Special recognition was dedicated to Luisa Pani, whose pioneering research on recycled aggregates at the University of Cagliari began more than twenty years ago and has contributed significantly to the development of this field.
The SARCOS project also expresses sincere thanks to Francesco Pinna and Arnas Majumder for their essential organizational support, as well as to Matteo Lecis Cocco-Ortu, Fabrizio Pilo, and Ivan Blečić for their participation in the event.
The conference represented an important opportunity to share scientific results and foster dialogue between academia, professionals, and institutions, confirming how research can become a real driver of change when scientific rigor meets vision and tangible territorial impact.
